Welcome to Rhopalocera & Odonata Association of Rajapalayam

Our Story

Rhopalocera and Odonata Association of Rajapalayam (ROAR) is a prominent, volunteer-driven non-profit organization based in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu, India. Our mission is to deepen the connection between people and nature by promoting environmental conservation and providing meaningful education on lesser-known fauna, such as butterflies and odonates (dragonflies and damselflies), that are often overlooked in favor of larger, more charismatic wildlife.

At ROAR, we focus on the study, conservation, and documentation of biodiversity with a particular emphasis on butterflies, odonates, and other lesser-known species within the Srivilliputhur Meghamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR) and urban areas of Virudhunagar district. Our passionate team of nature enthusiasts is committed to raising awareness about these groups and highlighting their crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. Together, we work tirelessly to inspire a greater appreciation for all facets of biodiversity.

Advocating biodiversity as stewards.

Our journey began in May 2015 with a commitment to documenting the butterfly and odonate diversity within our region. Of the 337 butterfly species found in the Western Ghats, our team has documented nearly 250 species in the SMTR and surrounding landscapes. Similarly, out of 144 odonate species recorded across Tamil Nadu, we have identified around 65 species within Virudhunagar district and the sanctuary premises.

Over time, our studies have expanded to include additional taxa, such as Tiger Beetles, Moths, and trees, as we continue to broaden our focus and deepen our research into various facets of the ecosystem. Our expertise and research currently focus on birds, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, damselflies, tiger beetles, and trees. In the future, we aim to expand our studies to include other lesser-known and understudied groups, broadening our understanding of biodiversity.

Since the lockdown, our organization has conducted numerous awareness programs, both online and offline, engaging the public and students nationwide. These initiatives have reached over 6,000 people, fostering a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and enhancing understanding of lesser-known fauna. We have also created and published a range of educational materials such as brochures on common butterflies, odonates, and trees that are among the first of their kind in Tamil Nadu.

In addition to booklets and brochures, we offer a selection of unique merchandise, including lapel pins, T-shirts, bookmarks, and postcards, meticulously designed to reflect the beauty and significance of our natural world. The proceeds from these sales directly fund our research and educational programs, allowing us to continue our work and expand our reach.

In 2022, we launched two flagship programs:

– WildEarthlings: An eco-stewardship initiative encouraging individuals to actively participate in environmental conservation.

– NEST (Nature Education for Students and Teachers): An eco-literacy program aimed at fostering environmental awareness among students and community members.

These programs have reached over 3,000 people across Virudhunagar district, helping to cultivate a generation of eco-conscious citizens.

On 5th of November 2023, we are grateful to receive Tamil Nadu Government’s prestigious Green Champion Award by the Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board and from the District Collector Dr.V.P.Jeyaseelan IAS for our exemplary contribution in the field of Environmental Protection and Education.

Our expertise and research currently focus on birds, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, damselflies, tiger beetles, and trees. In the future, we aim to expand our studies to include other lesser-known and understudied groups, broadening our understanding of biodiversity.
